Indigenous Friends of Israel Seminar – ANZAC, Lighthorse & Indigenous & Jewish Connections
Speakers Barry Rodgers OAM Light Horse Assoc, Lance Waters, Indigenous descendant of ANZACs, Adam Dostalek, Filmmaker “Ride Like an ANZAC.”
Host Barbara Miller shared her and Norman’s experiences hosting tours to Israel a number of times visiting sites of World War 1 and 2 including Be’er Sheva and Tzemach. She highlighted the bravery and sacrifice of ANZAC servicemen. Barbara expressed concerns about the erosion of Australian values and the need to address ANZAC modules in schools rewritten by pro-Palestinian teachers to bring shame on our servicemen and Australia.
This meeting discussed the Australian Light Horse’s role in the 1917 Battle of Be’er Sheva and its significance in helping establish the modern State of Israel. Barry explained the characteristics of the Australian Light Horse and their mounted infantry tactics, while Lance shared his personal connection as a descendant of Indigenous Light Horse troopers who participated in a centenary commemoration in Israel. Elsie Amamoo, shared how she reenacted the charge of the light horse at the centenary to honour her great grandfather.
Adam presented his documentary film “Ride Like an Anzac,” which combined footage from both a commemorative bike ride and a horse reenactment of the historic charge, highlighting the previously overlooked Indigenous involvement in ANZAC forces. The discussion also covered the need for better recognition of Australian contributions in Israel and the importance of preserving these historical connections for future generations.
Left – Munganbana Norman’s painting in the Holding Light art exhibition at the Bondi Pavilion Art Gallery. We went to the opening Friday night and then had a Shabbat meal with a family. Right – Barbara checking the first draft of her biography of child survivor of the Holocaust Eva Engel.
We spent 2 days with her and her son Roger in Sydney and visited Judy Menczel who is making a film on Eva. We also had meetings with others in Sydney including Rabbi Ulman of the Bondi Synagogue, Rachel Torrington, filmmaker Adam Dostalek etc. Andrew Lowy and Denise Archie joined us for the art gallery opening as Norman’s guests. 28 paintings were chosen out of 105 entries so it was a privilege for Norman to be involved. If you would like to read the amazing story that goes with the painting.

TAKING WELLS OF BE’ER SHEVA & OPENING WAY TO JERUSALEM
By Barbara Miller, excerpt from 2010 report on ANZAC/Lighthorse Tour of Israel
The taking of the wells of Be’er-Sheva (Beersheba) was critical for Allied victory in Palestine. The British had fought all day, the NZ Mounted Rifles and an Australian regiment took the high place of Tel es Sabe after heavy fighting. Still, all would have been lost had it not been for a daring charge by the Australian Lighthorsemen (about 800 of them) charging straight into the Turkish guns. They were not cavalry but mounted infantry and the daring charge just before nightfall took the Turks by surprise and they didn’t adjust the sights on their guns quickly enough.
Some Australians fought hand to hand in the trenches and others jumped the trenches and rode into the city to stop the Germans blowing up the wells. German planes were firing at them as they did their dangerous but successful charge. Still, the charge could not have happened without the British fighting all day and the New Zealanders taking the high ground, preventing them being mowed down.
This happened on Oct 31, 1917. On the same day, the British Parliament passed the Balfour Declaration in favour of the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The political will and the military victory went hand in hand. After fighting in other towns, Gen Allenby was able to walk into Jerusalem with his forces and accept the surrender of the Turks, thus ending 400 years of the Ottoman Empire, and nearly 1200 years of almost uninterrupted Islamic rule of Jerusalem. There had always been a Jewish presence in Jerusalem
Shabbat HaGodal, the Great Shabbat Before Passover by Ps Barbara Miller 28.3.26
While this video covers all aspects of the Passover Seder, it does so from a Christian viewpoint. The message explains the significance of Shabbat HaGadol (the Great Sabbath before Passover) and how it connects to Christian faith and biblical teaching.
Key points include: Biblical feasts (like Passover) are appointed times from God for connection, not just Jewish traditions. Christians can observe them as a meaningful way to remember God’s works. Passover and Easter are essentially the same feast, with Jesus (Yeshua) as the Passover Lamb, whose sacrifice brings freedom from sin, death, and spiritual bondage.
The story of the Exodus is paralleled with salvation through Jesus—just as the Israelites were freed from Egypt, believers are freed spiritually. Faith is essential: just as the Israelites trusted the lamb’s blood for protection, believers trust in Jesus’ sacrifice for salvation and security. The Passover Seder symbols (lamb, bitter herbs, matzah, wine, etc.) each represent aspects of suffering, redemption, and deliverance.
The message highlights God’s protection, redemption, and covenant, including the idea of applying “the blood of Jesus” spiritually for protection. It also touches on prophecy and end-times themes, including Elijah’s role, repentance, and the importance of being spiritually prepared. A strong emphasis is placed on salvation, repentance, and evangelism, encouraging people to turn to God while there is still time. In short: Passover is presented as a powerful reminder of God’s redemption—fulfilled in Jesus—calling believers to faith, repentance, and a deeper connection with God. Shanah Tovah! We are entering Rosh HaShannah or Yom Teruah so Happy New Year and may your name be inscribe in the Lamb’s book of life and it is if you have given your heart to Jesus. Our hearts go out to Jewish people in Israel and worldwide who have been through such a difficult year but we know that God is in control and Israel is not only protected well by the IDF but also by God’s heavenly army of angels.
PROPHETIC SIGNIFICANCE See the video below for more on the prophetic significance of this feast. It begins the new year 5785. 5 stands for grace, 7 for completion and 8 for new beginnings so we have a time of double grace, completion of one season and the beginning of a new season.
ISRAEL AND MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT By Ps Barbara Miller
Australia and other nations keep criticizing Israel, calling for a ceasefire, putting pressure on Israel and not putting pressure on Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah to do so. This is similar to the appeasement we have seen Neville Chamberlain do re Hitler and we know the result was that Hitler was emboldened to murder 6 million Jews. We are very concerned that this puts Australia with the nations that are cursed rather than blessed (Genesis 12:1-3) and bringing judgement on us (Mat 25, sheep and goat nations).
Through history we have had Herod, Haman, Hitler, Hamas and Hezbollah – all starting with H and seeking to eliminate Israel. Hamas means violence in Hebrew and is in the Bible. We are entering the year 5785 on the Hebrew calendar and the word “hey” is a key word for this coming year. Interestingly, it is in the name of God – YHWH. Hey means behold or look, divine breath, (the Holy Spirit), revelation and light. No matter what the enemies of YHWH do, YHWH’s people will prevail in His strength.
I have spoken in the past that we are seeing the nations in Psalm 83 aligned against Israel in this present conflict and the nations that will come against Israel in the Ezekiel 38-39 war are already in place, aligned and working against Israel though this is not expected to reach fulfilment till half way through the tribulation. SEE PSALM 83 MESSAGE.
I sense that we have a situation now that is similar to the time of Purim when Esther and Mordecai exposed the plan by Haman for genocide of the whole of the Jewish people in the Persian empire which was worldwide. Today Persia is called Iran and we have the same spirit operating that Daniel spoke of – the demonic Prince of Persia who was fighting in the heavenlies to prevent the answer to Daniel’s prayer so the messenger angel was helped in the fight by the godly Prince of Israel, archangel Michael. (Daniel 10:12-14, 20-21)
When Haman tricked King Xerxes of Persia into writing a decree to kill all the Jews on a certain day, the King’s decree could not be reversed but the King told Esther to write another decree that reversed the effect of the first decree. This decree was that the Jews could rise up and defend themselves on that day appointed for them to be attacked. They not only defended themselves but got rid of a lot of their enemies and a fear of the Jews came on the land. I sense that this is what is happening now. Israel needs not only to defend itself from terrorists but continue long enough to prevent a repeat of the October 7 massacre. (Esther 9:1,5,16) I sense we are in a time of repeating when the Jews of the Persian empire (which was 127 provinces extending from India to Ethiopia) got rid of their enemies. They didn’t start it but they finished it. At least for a time as there are more attacks on Israel to come.
I also sense that this scripture is relevant 2 Ki 13:15-19 where Elisha told the King of Israel to strike the ground and he stopped after 3 times with Elisha saying he would only have victory 3 times and not completely destroy the army coming against them because he should have struck it 5 or 6 times. Israel today needs to finish its job of protecting its citizens, not stop half way. Hamas has vowed to do Oct 7 over and over again. Hezbollah was planning an Oct 7 attack in a few days which Israel has now likely thwarted. Make no mistake – Israel is only being attacked because it is part of God’s plan for the redemption of the whole of humanity and satan does not want that. So we need to step up our prayers and stand with Israel so Messiah can come back and reign from Jerusalem, his throne.
“Open the east window,” he said, and he opened it. “Shoot!” Elisha said, and he shot. “The LORD’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!” Elisha declared. “You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.”
18Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and the king took them. Elisha told him, “Strike the ground.” He struck it three times and stopped.
19The man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.”

PUBLIC RELATIONS CAMPAIGN AGAINST ANTISEMITISM AND ANTI-ISRAEL BIAS
Our Public Relations Campaign is underway though the Gofundme campaign to support it is very slow to gain momentum. We don’t have any paid staff and have limited funds. Please help spread the word about it, donate yourself no matter how small, and volunteer. We are pleased an experienced curriculum writer is looking at the Queensland schools curriculum for us to see where we can get an inroad and will help us prepare materials.
Barbara has already written a training manual for adults and upper secondary with activities. We have met with the Executive Council of Australian Jewry which is a peak body for Australian Jews and they have asked to partner with us which is great.
We are continuing with our monthly zoom seminar series and daily social media reaching out worldwide to counter lies re current events and history.
Adam Kreuzer who is Education Officer for the Australian Jewish Association is writing regular articles for our website and we have been working for a couple of years with Eli Rabinowitz of the WE ARE HERE Foundation in Perth as he is an educator.

Education Campaign Against Antisemitism by Indigenous Friends of Israel International
Please get involved! We need your help!
We would love to connect with you and help you support Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East, working against calls for its destruction and the genocide of its people. These calls are advancing at great pace since October 7. Indigenous Friends of Israel formed in July 2017 because of concerns over Australia’s policy towards Israel. Since then we have gone international as antisemitism is international and isan ancient hatred. The forces standing against Israel also oppose Western and/or Judeo-Christian values which have helped us achieve a society with social cohesion and the rule of law.
Please help us take a stand against antisemitism, and for a community where all are valued and safe. There are many opportunities to use your passion, gifting and skills as a volunteer whether you are a person of faith or not. United we stand and divided we fall. Please complete the form to volunteer.
Are you good at creating or sharing social media, fundraising, administration, film and video making, government advocacy, newsletters, speaking, representing a geographical area, organising zoom meetings or do you have other giftings or talents that you can use to bless the Lord, the Jewish people, and Israel. It doesn’t matter where you live in the world, you can get involved. Check it out here.
