Norman & Barbara Miller handing his big boomerang on “No Racism in the constitution” to former speaker of federal parliament Bronwyn Bishop accompanied by former Minister for Indigenous Australian Ken Wyatt and Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch at Parliament House Canberra 27.11.2013 – 10 years ago. Norman was campaigning for Indigenous recognition in the constitution at the same time.

AUSTRALIA VOTES NO TO RACISM & INEQUALITY OF VOICE

By Barbara Miller 15.10.23

About 60% of Australians voted no in the Voice referendum held on 14.10.23 with no state having a majority of yes voters. The ACT, Teal electorates, and the richer electorates had a majority of yes voters whereas electorates that had a high percentage of First Nations people had a majority of no voters. So, it was clearly not an issue that had the support of a majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This is a big blow to the efforts of Prime Minister Albanese who spent hundreds of millions of dollars on this referendum that could have been spent on improving health, education, and housing etc. on the ground for First Nations people and easing the cost of living pressure for many Australians. Albanese was so intent on getting this Voice up as his legacy that he was blind to other issues, including joining world leaders in a quick response to the Hamas massacre of Israelis.

Millions were also spent on the yes campaign by big corporations that would have been better spent Closing the Gap between First Nations and other Australians. We have a combination of Big Government, Big Name First Nations leaders, Big Business, Big Banks, Big Sports, and Big Faith and Multicultural groups who all supported the yes vote by saying they were taking the moral high ground on this issue.
However, the Australian people pushed back against the elites and voted for a united nation not divided by race and they voted for equal citizenship of Australians. They stood up to the moral intimidation and voted no.

The sad thing is that the Prime Minister and the First Nations leaders who ran the yes campaign have set back the cause of reconciliation in this nation and now we need some healing as a nation.
First Nations leaders and voters who supported the yes vote are saying that they have been rejected by the Australian people and are in a time of mourning for the result of the vote, their dreams for their reshaping of Australia dashed. They say they have a media blackout for one week with flags at half-mast to grieve and reassess. We certainly feel for them and want to comfort them at this time.

However, Australians have great goodwill towards First Nations people. They would have voted for recognition of First Australians people in the constitution if it had not been conflated with the Voice as a way to do it. What the people of Australia did is to reject the particular model that was put forward.
While there are a few racists in Australia, both in the non-Indigenous and the Indigenous communities, Australia is not a racist nation and has made many important steps to advance the cause of First Nations people.

As the no campaign First Nations leaders have said, the referendum was based on a lie that there was not a First Nations voice advising government because there are many national First Nations organisations advising government including the Coalition of Peaks which represents them all. It has about 80 member organisations. Also, there is no guarantee that the Voice would have made a difference to close the gap.
We do believe a reassessment needs to be made of the programs run for and by First Nations people and the effectiveness of these.

Ps Norman Miller is calling for a reconciliation roundtable gathering to be held by zoom on Thursday 19 October at 6.30pm Brisbane time and 7.30pm Sydney time which he and I will be hosting. He is doing this because over 25 years ago, he had a prophetic word that he and I were called to be watchmen over the nation of Australia in the area of reconciliation. Norman is calling Christians, First Nations and others to pray for reconciliation and to pray for strategies for our nation to move forward and heal after the failed referendum. WELCOME THE KING OF GLORY

By Ps Barbara Miller

This is a photo of the Welcome the King of Glory event in Israel taken 13.10.17. It was the first one and Norman and I attended it taking a team. A huge number attended, mostly from Pacific nations as the All Pacific Arise (formerly APPA) came at the invitation of Messianic Jewish leaders from Israel. This year 300 attended and it was held at the King of Kings congregation in Jerusalem. While there were calls to cancel it, half of the delegates had already arrived, being there when the Hamas massacre of Israelis occurred. Because of security concerns, the government only allowed 50 people at a time in a room so 6 rooms were used with TV screens.

The 3-day conference is now ended but half of the delegates have not been able to go home because the airport was closed. There are likely to be other Christians still in Israel from the ICEJ and ANCJ conferences so we pray for the safety of Christians in Israel as well as the Israeli people.

The Welcome the King of Glory conference was reportedly successful. We have some of our Indigenous Friends of Israel state coordinators at this conference. The nations repented of their idolatry and covenanted their nation to the Lord and Messianic Jewish leaders repented for Israel’s rejection of Messiah. No doubt heaven took note. Messianic leaders would have found comfort from the nations standing and praying with them in their hour of need.

We ask for prayers for Christian Arabs as well. Forty Arabs were killed among the Israelis killed by Hamas as they tend to be indiscriminate in their killing. There are good relationships between Messianic Jews and Christian Arabs in Israel built up over a long time. However, there are tensions in Israel as Arabs don’t want to be mistaken for Hamas.

We continue to pray as well that this does not develop into a global conflict before the appointed time of the Lord.

WE STAND WITH ISRAEL & PRAY FOR ISRAEL

Photo – Norman Miller blowing the shofar on all the border of Israel and Syria. We have prayed on all the borders of Israel a number of times, including at Sderot. Unfortunately, there was a serious border breach last weekend on Shabbat and the last day of Sukkot with Hamas attacking Israel by land, sea, and air. This has left 1200 Israelis brutally slaughtered, including elderly and Holocaust survivors, 2500 wounded, about 150 taken hostage to Gaza, children and women beheaded and mutilated, women raped, and unimaginable torture.

This is the worst loss of life for Jewish people in one day since the Holocaust!!!

Our hearts are breaking as we stand with the people of Israel and Jews worldwide, especially with the pro-Hamas demonstration at the Sydney Opera House with a shameful reaction by the NSW police and government in facilitating it and telling Jews to stay home and not draw comfort from seeing the sails of the Sydney Opera House lit up with the colours of the Jewish flag.

Also shame on Foreign Minister Penny Wong telling Israel to show restraint in responding to this barbarism. Also, shame on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese taking 4 days to contact the Australian Jewish community to express his condolences. He also missed out on joining in an international statement of condemnation of Hamas and expressing support for Israel.

We have contacted our considerable number of Jewish friends in Israel and Australia to express our support and offer comfort. Isaiah 40 says, “Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God. With gentle words, tender and kind … ” We are concerned that Jewish people in Australia are afraid and not safe. This is also a concern worldwide.

There have been missiles also from Lebanon and Syria. We know that Iran is behind Hamas and Hezbollah. Psalm 83 comes to mind and we need to pray that we don’t have a global conflict before God’s timing. Psalm 83:

O God, do not remain silent;
do not turn a deaf ear,
do not stand aloof, O God.
See how your enemies growl,
how your foes rear their heads.
With cunning they conspire against your people;
they plot against those you cherish.
“Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”
With one mind they plot together;
they form an alliance against you—
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
    of Moab and the Hagrites,
Byblos, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the people of Tyre.
Even Assyria has joined them
    to reinforce Lot’s descendants.

Many Christians around the world are praying in support of Israel and that it does not become World War 3 before the Lord’s timing. Rick Riding is one of those who have made such a call. The Canberra Declaration has called its intercessors to join in a worldwide 21-day prayer call. RECONCILIATION NEWZ BUZZ Sept 2023 no 2, 27 Sept

Long-time Supporter of Indigenous Advancement Will Vote No to the Voice and Explains Why in a New Book Called Voice, Treaty Truth: Has the Christian Voice Been Heard?

Pastor Barbara Miller and her husband Aboriginal pastor Norman Miller will vote no to the Voice and she explains why in a new book called Voice, Treaty Truth: Has the Christian Voice Been Heard? The book covers the journey of how she got to this decision after being an activist in First Nations affairs for over 50 years.

On the verge of the Voice Referendum and as part of a heated debate about the Voice, this new book comes out on Amazon on October 6, just in time to inform Christians and other voters on referendum day October 14.

Author Barbara Miller says, “I wrote the book because I don’t believe the Christian voice, of First Nations and others, has been heard. I don’t want Australia to be divided by race and I value equality before the law and the Voice will breach this. These are basic Christian values. If it succeeds, the Voice will divide First Nations people themselves as well as the rest of the population.

“This book not only covers all the reasons to vote yes and all the reasons to vote no as well as the progressive no case but also looks at the spiritual dynamics and motivations behind the positions people are taking. As a pastor and former psychologist, this is an important area to explore, especially when there is so much confusion around the Voice.

“I have also been an activist in First Nations affairs for over 50 years and have written over a dozen books, many of them on First Nations issues. As a historian and sociologist, I have followed the Voice debate closely and covered the history leading to where we are now. Regrettably, I will probably lose some of my friendships forged with First Nations and other activists over many years. However, I also have to live with my conscience and I have to listen to a higher Voice – the Voice of God.

“I have had visions and dreams that have led me to re-examine my position and call out the support of major churches for a Constitutional Voice. This could lead to the possible constitutional recognition of Aboriginal spirituality when there is meant to be a separation of religion and state in the constitution as per section 116 which deals with religious freedom. This section prohibits the imposition of any religious observance which could include Welcome to Country ceremonies.

“Also, I do not believe we need another expensive bureaucracy that will cut across the many First Nations voices we already have with no guarantee it will Close the Gap or improve the lives on the ground for First Nations people.

“My husband Munganbana Norman Miller is an Aboriginal pastor and artist and is of the Jirrbal, Bar-barrum, and Wadjanbarra Yidinji people of north Queensland. He campaigned for many years for the recognition of First Nations people and the removal of racism from the constitution. He presented a giant boomerang with 360 signatures on the back saying “No Racism in the Constitution” to then-Speaker Bronwyn Bishop at Parliament House on 27 November 2013. Norman donated this to the Museum of Australian Democracy in Old Parliament House and they have included it in a special exhibition.

“His on-paper petition based on the Expert Panel’s recommendations was presented to federal parliament in two stages by Warren Entsch MP in December 2013 and February 2016 totaling over 5,000 signatures gathered by hand from around Australia.

“We presented a smaller version of this boomerang to Senators Jacinta Nampijinja Price and Kerrynne Liddle at Parliament House Canberra on July 31 this year.

“I launch my book by Zoom on 29 September at 6.30 pm but it is already available for pre-order and will be sent to those who have ordered it on 6 October LINK. A paperback will be available too but you might not receive it till after the referendum.”

Australia is at a crossroads. Is it a racist nation? Will reconciliation ever be possible? Will it be divided forever? Will we have two classes of citizens, Indigenous and non-Indigenous after the Voice Referendum on October 14? Do we have to deal with the original sin of colonialism as the foundation of Australia from which we can never have redemption or forgiveness?

Is separatism the way forward? Or can Australia heal after this divisive debate over the Voice to Parliament and government referendum? We are fighting for the very heart of Australia. We are soul-searching about who we really are as a nation and what we want to be and our vision of the future. We are told that whether we are black or white, First Nations or non-Indigenous that if we vote yes, we are enshrining racism in the constitution and if we vote no, we are racist, ignorant, and hateful. Years of work for reconciliation and to build a multicultural cohesive society in Australia are at risk.

Has the Christian voice been heard? This book gives a Christian response by a pastor and former psychologist who has been an activist and researcher in First Nations affairs for over 50 years. She explains why she has changed from supporting the Uluru Statement from the Heart to voting no at the referendum.
Barbara is a prayer leader, sociologist, and historian who is a bestselling author and has written over a dozen books, most of them on Australian history involving First Nations people. She has also written books on the Holocaust and on Christianity.
